Health Matters

Welcome to Health Matters. The aim of this section of the Keeshond Club web site is to promote the health and wellbeing of our beautiful breed by offering information on the conditions that have been found to affect the Keeshond and the progress that has been made at eradicating these from the breed.

The greatest advance is the availability of a genetic test to establish whether or not a Keeshond has the gene associated with Primary Hyperparathyroid diseases - PHPT. This has enabled breeders to ensure that only dogs that are negative for the gene are used for breeding. This valuable tool has given us the means to make the gene history when breeding.

Active research is also underway in the other two known conditions and we are fortunate to have the support of two talented veterinary partners. With the aid of DNA research, Veterinary medicine is now developing rapidly and, we can look forward
